PN Canada Code of Ethics

 
 
The principles that guide and direct the Practical Nurses Canada as a national organization reflect the beliefs and values of provincial member associations. These are based on the following assumptions:

PN Canada supports the rights of all members of society irrespective of age, sex, race, religion, disability and/or sexual orientation to obtain the highest standard of health care that its membership can provide;

PN Canada is obligated to preserve the right to autonomy of its membership;

PN Canada supports the right of provincial member associations to autonomy and self-determination;

PN Canada supports the right of provincial governing bodies to legislate standards of practice for individual members in order to provide safe and optimum health care for the public;

PN Canada supports the right of provincial associations to maintain and improve the scope and standards of nursing practice for the professional development of its members;

PN Canada must accept the responsibility and be accountable for specified actions and functions of the organization; and

PN Canada membership has the right and responsibility to promote professional growth and development.

Membership

 
 

Membership in PN Canada will be those organizations or groups that pay the prescribed fee into PN Canada.

Structure

 
 

  1. The Board will meet, at a minimum, twice a year: once in person and once by teleconference.
  2. Travel to and from meetings will be at the expense of PN Canada for the Chair (or alternate) and by the PN Canada member organization for the Chair-Elect (or alternate).
  3. Membership fees will be as prescribed by policy.

More About Licensed Practical Nurses

All provinces and territories in Canada have LPNs. They receive theoretical and clinical education in one to two year post-secondary (community college) programs, and are qualified to provide competent, professional nursing care. LPNs are professionals with a defined scope of practice, and are regulated through legislation in each province/territory. There are approximately 75,000 licensed practical nurses in Canada, representing the second largest regulated health profession in the country.

Licensed practical nurses practice in a variety of settings, which include:

  • Community Health Centres
  • Community Nursing
  • Doctor’s Offices
  • Foot Care Private Practice
  • General Hospitals
  • Home Care
  • Independent Business
  • Industrial Settings
  • Long Term Care Facilities
  • Private Homes/Agencies
  • Psychiatric Facilities
  • Public Health and/or Schools
  • Rehabilitation and Therapeutic Centres

Provincial or territorial associations of LPNs who join PN Canada participate as equal partners on the Board of Directors. The PN Canada Board consists of two voting directors from each member association.

Affiliated Individuals

Individuals registered as LPNs, in good standing with their provincial/territorial registrar, from provinces or territories which do not belong to PN Canada are entitled to affiliate membership upon payment of the prescribed annual fee.
