Name change announcement (CPNA to PN Canada)
(posted January 13, 2007)

The Canadian Association of Practical Nurses (CPNA) formerly CAPNA is pleased to announce our new name. PRACTICAL NURSE CANADA( PNCanada). Over the years not only has our focus changed but the title by which Practical Nurses are addressed has changed. The Board of Directors felt the time had come to simplify our name and hopefully distinguish it from the many other accronyms that other organizations use that seem to frequently be confused with Practical Nurse Canada.

PNCanada continues to lobby for the profession of Practical nursing at the National level. We promote our profession as the "Fine Art of Hands on Nursing" and stress the need for bedside nurses in all areas of nursing. PNCanada represents Practical nurses at National conferences dealing with Human Resource planning. The Directors meet with Ministers provincially and federally to increase awareness of the important role Practical Nurses can play in resolving the nursing shortage in our country.

PNCanada is working hard to establish a National Standard for Practical Nurses across the country. Employers want to utilize Practicasl Nurses but frequently the varied scope of practice complicates the decision makers job. PNCanada hopes to achieve a standardized education program that will lead to a standard scope of practice for all of Canada.

PNCanada sits as voting member of Canadian Patient Safety Institute
(posted: October 31, 2006)

A Message from Dr. Michel Brazeau

Sharon Sholzberg-Gray, CEO and President, Canadian Healthcare Association, and I, have been mandated to carry out the mid-term evaluation of the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI). We are assisted by Ben Chan, Barbara Mildon, Linda I. Poloway, and Ian C. White.

A survey of members of the institute and other organizations interested in patient safety activities is a key component of this process. A very small number of organizations across Canada, including yours, have been invited to take part in this very short survey (10 questions). You may wish to answer personally or refer this request to an appropriate respondent. To access the on-line questionnaire, simply click on the link below:

http://www5.dufferinresearch.com/dash3/DashLogin?id=dm707

A review of CPSI accomplishments and objectives, prepared by the CPSI, is attached for your information.

Data gathered in the survey and structured interviews will be aggregated and de-linked from the organizations and individuals who have provided it.

Structured 20 minute interviews with a limited number of the participants (approximately 50) will also be conducted as part of the evaluation process. The final question in the survey will allow you to signal your interest in participating in such an interview.

A very prompt response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and do not hesitate to contact me should you require further information.

New Position Statement
CPNA Releases Position Statement on Scope of Practice for Licensed Practical Nurses 2004
(posted: March 15, 2004)
Canada’s health care system is failing to meet the needs of Canadians for timely access to care. For this reason, the Canadian Practical Nurses Association (CPNA) developed a document to clearly articulate the scope of practice of the Licensed/Registered Practical Nurse (LPN/RPN) in a comprehensive Position Statement.

The CPNA acknowledges the looming nursing shortage crisis and the position statement informs all stakeholders of the current, and potential, role of the practical nurse in health care.

This document clearly articulates that the LPN utilized to full scope of practice can be a key contributing factor to solving the health human resource challenges facing the nursing profession.
